Hi, During the week I am always in a hotel and albeit the Kodi system and my phone are connected to the same wifi, they cannot find each other, likely there is a firewall. Anybody has an Idea on how I could overcome this?

Probably not, if the hotel's router has "wifi isolation" feature enabled,

If the hotel WiFi doesn't have such isolation, I would strongly advise not to use it on security grounds.
For your use need you should look at a mobile hotspot device or capability on your existing devices.

Only solution I found so far is to connect them both to a vpn server where they can see each other, but it seems like an overkill

Bring your own router and create an AP or Repeater.
