Hmm - it's not exactly unsupported, it's just that hardware accelerated support is non-existent. Hi10p H264 stuff will play fine if you have a decent enough CPU. It's similar to 4:2:2 content - which is also unlikely to be hardware accelerated. It IS supported - as ffmpeg will decode it. (Though you may not get 10bit or 4:2:2 passed through...)
