Use SD for EPG guide or get it free somewhere?
#1
Question
I recently got a HDHomerun Connect and playing around with it and the official app in Kodi 16/17.

My 'server' has the NextPVR software installed and I'm using a trial subscription to Schedules Direct.

When I go into Kodi and the 'TV' section, I can watch live channels no problem. I can schedule recording and play them back with no problems. When I bring up the guide, it displays everything perfectly.

My question is, do I need to pay the $25/year for SD or does Kodi auto-magically get the guide data from somewhere else or is it pulling the guide from my SD subscription? I poked around on YouTube and saw some videos on how to configur IPTV Simple Client to grab the EPG from some //bbts_____/ web site. Is that a cheaper way to go or should I just stick with SD? (Assuming that Kodi is pulling the current EPG from there.)

60 cents a day. just do it

get mc2xml and use your schedules direct account to generate an xmltv.xml file

I Googled up 'mc2xml' and for whatever reason, the link I found is blocked here at work so forgive the n00b question........ what exactly is that program? Is it part of SD? Does it generate an xml file that Kodi reads from? Is there any benefit to doing that vs. leaving things as they are? (Is Kodi populating the EPG via SD setup on my NextPVR client on the server or getting it magically somewhere else?)

That's the guide I followed when setting up NextPVR.

I guess it's safe to assume then that yes, Kodi absolutely pulls EPG data from NextPVR (which is pulling it from SD). Guess I'll go ahead and pony up the $25/year.

Thanks

Yes, Kodi pulls the EPG from the PVR backend you're using. Since you're using NextPVR, no need to fluff around with xmltv or mc2xml etc. Just use it's built in Schedules Direct support.

Here is a video showing you how to set it up:

The guide data comes "in-band" from the tv stations. You don't have to pay to get it (at least in Australia).

Unfortunately that's usually not the case in North America. You can typically only get a few hours of listings over ATSC, and none over QAM (digital cable).
