All this Resolution / Refresh switching is completely sorted out and seamless when running LibreELEC Jarvis on AMLogic S905 platforms as an example. But then you are not complicating matters by using Android or external player solutions with LE either.
As per @Koying, Android 6.0 does support resolution switching. It just hasn't been implemented properly in any device so far.
