I have both and the zidoo has excellent 3D performance... i find it better than the pi3. One caveat is if you have an older receiver and require multi-channel PCM then the zidoo is not your choice... it can only do 2.0 PCM.

Hi there. I only have an old Dolby 5.1 decoder with optical input so presume I'll be ok? I've converted all my rips to Dolby 5.1

It has no problem with passing through regular Dolby and DTS 5.1. There are some people who have older HDMI receivers that don't support DTSHD and TrueHD but still want HD audio via PCM conversion... the people in this group will need to find another player.

Which player besides of Raspberry Pi 3? My guess is a player with a Sigma chipset with the necessary licenses, right? I've read in Zidoo forum that the RTD1295DD SoC does not support HD audio decoding to Multichannel LPCM over HDMI. The same happens with the HiSilicon Hi3798C V200 found on HiMedia Q5/Q10 Pro. Perhaps a Dune HD Solo 4K or a Popcorn A-500 player? I'm curious about that, but actually I don't need this feature.

From memory here the Android Kodi Boxes that support HD Audio decode to Multichannel PCM are the nVIDIA Shield, WeTek Play2/Hub and the FireTV2.
Extra work with the Android Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) has to be done I believe to even allow this.

Android Kodi uses an internally packaged Open source Audio decoder to achieve this.

If you want bit perfect HD Audio to lossless Multichannel PCM, you have to ditch Android all together and use Intel, AML S905(x) or RPi. All running Win / OSX or Linux / LibreELEC.

Android is definitely NOT the platform to use if you are an Audio nerd and want bit perfect FLAC > multichannel PCM audio output over HDMI.

@wrxtasy: Thank you for your reply. I think that Dune and Popcorn players are in the same category, allowing HD audio decoding. However, they play in another league and are not very known in this forum.

One last question for all X9S/X10 owners: Can I zoom in/out the picture? Is the zoom feature customizable in steps? My old TVIX 6500A has zoom in/out in several steps (SigmaDesigns SMP8635 SoC).

No, i use ZDMC (the kodi Fork based on Kodi 16.1) with the Zidoo player.
And my moviewall won't update anymore with new movies and movie info.

Doing some research on x9s some users report it doesn't do dts 7.1 decode.?

I got dts hd 7.1 receiver setup will connect with hdmi should i get proper dts hd 7.1 from a 7.1 dts hd source like i did using my htpc thanks

Got mine yesterday too. What I've done so far is to upgrade firmware to latest 1.4.6 as per a few posts back. Then uninstalled zdmc. Reinstalled zdmc 17.1 using link in same post. Zdmc launches my movies and 3d movies using their native player which seems great quality.
Initial thoughts so far:
1.Picture quality looks exceptional, a step up from my pi
2.Tested a stream from ustv vod. Again found picture quality great, though did have to adjust audio delay for lip sync which is something I've not had to do on other devices. Also buffered a couple of times which again is not something I usually experience. Hopefully not a common factor!
3. 3d looks impressive from short tests, but looking forward to trying it out with my benq!
4. Been a real pain trying to access file shares on my Mac, either via nfs or smb. It's just not seeing them or letting me in if I enter path manually. Smb shares fine from windows pc.
5. You can also download kodi 17.3 from play store and use a wrapper to use the zidoo native player for 3d movies. Process looks a tad complicated to me!!!!
6. Can't advise on audio. I only have Dolby 5.1 and that works great...
7. Zidoo native player doesn't seem to pick up on right eye first flags from mkvtoolnix so I'm having to switch eyes manually through the zidoo player interface after movie starts
