Unless you use an addon that manages artwork, Kodi expects local artist art to be called folder.jpg, and located in the artist folder that needs to be common to all the songs that have that artist as the album artist. With respect to that collaboration albums (2 or more album artists that also have albums of their own) can cause problems.

I think fan art can be called fanart.jpg, located in the same folder.
