there exists a proposed way of tagging cache directories in order to exclude them from backups by placing a file with a particular name and content (CACHEDIR.TAG) in the directory to be excluded; http://www.brynosaurus.com/cachedir/spec.html provides details and general rationale. the specification is recognized by all backup programs that invoke gnu tar, as well as rsync, attic, and several others.
it appears to me that ~/.kodi/userdata/Thumbnails qualifies for that exclusion, as the thumbnails are collected automatically. that directory amounts to about 200MB on my box (about than 90% of the .kodi directory), and backing it up seems not to give any obvious benefit.
please consider generating an appropriately populated CACHEDIR.TAG file in all directories in kodi's user data that are safe to be dropped when restoring a backup.
