Starting from tomorrow there is a new setting to explicitely enable tonemapping. Fernet implemented the Reinhard Operator, which is found in literature and "one standard" doing Tonemapping. In the video OSD you will find a parameter between 0 and 5 where you can tune the values.

some progress is being made for HDR on Linux. Nvidia and RedHat are working on it.
hopefully if they do get it working on desktop Linux then you guys can use it on LE too.

@Milhouse - Your builds have been really slow to download this last week and almost seem throttled. I can pull down the LE 8.2.5 release from their site at over 25 MB/sec while your builds pull down around 100k/sec. Do you know if there's a problem with the mirrors?

I'm not aware of any issues - diagnosing the@Seems OK here in the UK:

I only have a 20Mbps downstream connection and I'm able to max it out. I believe the server has a 300Mbps internet connection.

It could be there's a peering issue between your ISP and our host (Digital Ocean, Germany) - you may want to check with your ISP.

Note that I believe the LE 8.2.5 releases are mirrored and would be retrieved from a different server, quite possibly one geographically closer to you.

Your understanding is wrong. Tonemap and HDR -> SDR conversion was there for months now. New is an option to influence the overall "brightness".

Tonemap - off, Test-2160p.hevc.hdr.dts-hd.ma.mkv work fine.
