I spent ages thinking this was a problem with my passthrough setup before trying an .mkv file instead. I get both DTS and 5.1 in .mkv files but nothing in WMVHD. Is this just an XBMC limitation atm?

Check whether it does it in mplayer for linux - it could be a demuxer problem in ffmpeg for instance.

Mplayer gives me video, no sound, and this:
Cannot find codec for audio format 0x162.
For some reason I figured XBMC used its own batch of codecs. Do I need to install a Windows Media 9 codec or something?

Linux version just uses our dvdplayer which is just ffmpeg codecs
This codec is not part of ffmpeg, you can make linux mplayer support it by adding the external codecs for it.
Our dvdplayer doesn't yet support external codecs.
So there's no solution except add support for external codecs

XBMC on linux doesn't use any external windows dlls at this point, so installing any further codecs won't do anything (though it may fix playback in mplayer)

Cheers for that. At least I don't have to run around in circles anymore.
