Anyone know when the new amlogic s905d will be released as the specs look pretty good.

It has gigabit ethernet but looking at it now it is pretty much the same lol. So a s905x will play hdr and vp9 etc.

That's great so it basically does all the same things the s912 does? So why the need for the s912?

Bigger numbers and fancier tech Specs look good to the advertisers and device sellers.
All designed to sucker in buyers looking at nothing but tech specs, regardless of the fact that stable Firmware for such bleeding edge devices lags behind the Hardware that is released.
The AML S912 has already been show to be not much faster than the S905's. A bit more grunt for 3D gaming and that is about it in its current semi-useful incarnation as a media player. You can only pack so many CPU / GPU / VPU cores into a System on a Chip (SoC) before thermal limit problems and performance throttling occurs. Something AMLogic knows all too well about.
The S905X in the Mi Box for example combined with half decent AMLogic Marshmallow Firmware is already a snappy little device.
All for US $69

The added DVB support on S905D looks interesting, now if Amlogic devices could run Enigma 2 like a lot of 3rd party broadcom SOC based satellite and cable receivers do (VU, Zgemma, Mutant, technomate, dreambox etc), this could cause a significant shake up in the market...especially if plug in USB tuner support can be made to work on existing S905 and S905X devices.
Hardware wise and spec wise amlogic devices already provide better specs for less money than satellite receivers all that's missing is enigma 2 support and a combined DVB-S and DVB-C tuner . I've seen Amlogic devices like the mecool with integrated satellite tuners...but no Enigma 2 front end ...
I believe Wetek play devices have some limited Enigma 2 support...but very buggy and not very well supported, probably mostly due to missing drivers and kernel patches from Amlogic to make Enigma 2 more compatible..

AMLogic supply a generic TV App to sellers that want a frontend for inbuilt TV Tuner module support on their boxes.
WeTek tried to add some spit and polish to this generic App and rename it WeTV - and it's still a bit of a dog with fleas, after being released over 9 months ago.
You would find better PVR and S905D Tuner support from LibreELEC Kodi Krypton.
