If I am not mistaken the .idx which is the 'index' file contains the language name listings of it, you can try edit it with DVDSubedit or Subrip:

Otherwise for normal text-based external subtitles I believe that this naming standard must be used, see:

...I am not sure if XBMC supports converting two or three letter ISO 639 language and ISO 3166 country codes for subtitles, but I doubt it(?).
