Android nVidia Shield TV (2015 & 2017 Models) - UPDATED: May 25, 2018
Don't care to have poor quality for upscalling 1080p files with shield TV on 4K TV, because KODI plays 1080p file  at 1080p output (with 4K on the shield TV interface selected), then this is your 4K TV which is going to upscale to 4K, and the result is amazing if you have a good upscaling treatement on your 4K TV Wink
Auto resolution is top with KODI.

Thanks.
Just remove it as it never updates.

Oh that's sad, will this:
Android - How to: Create additional Kodi Channels for Android TV Home launcher (Oreo)
still work?

Thanks.

Yes, that works fine.

As far as I know, the only downsides are poor upscaling for non 4K HDR content and no Dolby vision. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Also I’m thinking of using a hard drive attached locally to the Shield because I can’t run Ethernet. I’ve known some media boxes in the past to not be compatible with certain hard drives and certain hard drive sizes. Can the shield run essentially any hard drive through the USB ports?
As said above, the upscaling isn't as much of an issue because 1080p can output as 1080p.  However, 720p isn't supported yet (they said it will come soon), so it will be upscaled either to 1080p or 4k.  Also, DVD content at 480p will be upscaled to 1080p or 4k.  I think it's Kodi doing the upscaling though, not the Shield.

As for hard drives, I haven't seen any compatibility issues.  There are some with SD cards on the older version that still has the SD card slot, but if you're getting a current version then that's not an issue.  I have a WD 10TB from Best Buy that has been working great.

720p works just fine if you whitelist the modes, but like you said wished SD material used 720p rather than 1080p so the TV upscaller can do most of the work.

720p desappeared from the whitelist !

Only if you have the Shield set to 12-bit 422 2020.  Otherwise 720p doesn't show up as an option in whitelist (although it does show up as a resolution available in the Shield, under some of the colorspaces).  There's a reason I switched back from 12-bit to 10-bit, but I honestly can't remember why now.  Also, the 720p is limited to 50/59/60 Hz, no 23.98 or 24 Hz.

Running v18 on a shield HDMI connected to a late model denon AVR onto a 4K Bravia. I'm reading lots of articles about refresh rate switching not working properly - wondering if there is a simple configuration and "what works and what doesn't" guide??

Issue I have is that when I set the Shield to it's default resolution (4K, 59.xx hz) I cannot see 1920 resolutions higher than 30hz in the whitelist selection option. It shows 30hz down do 23.xxhz bit no 50 or 60.. Found a workaround in forcing the Shield into 1920 after which all resolutions show up in the whitelist. Only drawback is that when I want to play 4K outside of Kodi I need to manually reset resolution on the Shield (and set it back after otherwise Kodi upscales to 4K itself for 1920/50hz as it can no longer find it in the whitelist...)

Workable - but is there a better way??

thnx

OK I found why, I was on UHD 50Hz 10 bits REC 2020 on shield TV settings, and no 720p available, I changed to UHD 60Hz 12 bits REC 2020 and now 720p is back Wink , but UHD 50Hz is gone Smile (only 25Hz is available)

lads - new to Shield and need some guidance.
based on my reading here i have done some settings but need your expert recommendation.

nvidia connected to yamaha rxa2050 which is HDR capable
yamaha connected to sony HDR tv xe90 on hdmi3 capable of HDR
i want all video processing to be done in TV and sound processing to be done in AVR
on shield i have default setting 59.9hz
on kodi - i have passthrough selected and all capable receivers set to on (my AVR can process all audio formats)
i have whitelisted 59.9hz and 24hz in kodi
(basically followed all steps in spmc wiki - https://github.com/koying/SPMC/wiki/Reco...ith-4K-GUI)

is this good enough?
when i watch netflix on nvidia i dont have to make any changes as netflix requires 59hz
when i watch a full 4k HDR movie, should i switch to 24p? how do i do that?
when i watch 1080p movie i want upscaling to be done in TV? where do i set that?

For 4k you should be good with that setup.  It will automatically switch to 24 hz (you probably want to whitelist 23.98 as well as most movies are actually 23.98 not 24).  If you need to manually change it, while a movie is playing, go to the video settings and there's an option to change resolution, which has both settings for resolution and framerate.  It will only show available options that are whitelisted though.

For 1080p, you need to whitelist all the applicable 1080p resolutions/frame rates.  Then Kodi will switch the shield to output in 1080p, and then either your AVR or TV will do the conversions as necessary.  If you only whitelist 4k, then Kodi will do the upscaling.
