The question was to discard a caching issue.
It is worth testing: Don't run update on box 2, but reboot it after changing a watched status on box 1

Reboot worked - added 2 episodes to the main box and scanned the library, nothing appeared in the 2nd box, reboot the 2nd box - the episodes appeared. Is there a cache control? any ideas? thanks!

upgraded to v17 with latest LibreELEC 8.0, dropped the DB and let it recreate itself, but the issue is still there, still have to manually update library on 2nd box to get all the new added episodes in and watched statuses. Playback resume still works fine on both boxes...
