You can make the system image just for your system drive. About the free upgrade to Windows 10, seems that the Windows Media Creation Tool is still working for computers with valid licence keys, although officially the offer has ended about a half year ago. So that could be quite easy route for update and you could still keeping your existing applications.

But the clean install is very tempting. In your case I would even buy e new SSD for Windows 10 and keep your existing drives as a backup.

On the other hand, if you now make the upgrade to 8.1 first, you still have the upgrade path to 10 later.

I had the exact same problem as you with the audio and video stuttering with every 4k video playback.
It was fixed by updating to kodi 17(krypton) for me tho.

Have you tried doing a backup of your userdata/addons (type %appdata% in explorers url and backup kodi folder) and doing a backup of your video library.

Then delete kodi completely (the folder in appdata also) and doing a fresh install of kodi?

I just updated my graphics to GTX 1050 Ti.

And if you have a surround sound system you want to use (like me) you can connect your computer to kodi and use resolution 3860x2160 and then just use a optical cable from the tv to the receiver

Installed Kodi, set it up, played one of the "un-playable" 4K files in my collection and you all were right, Hardware Decoding took effect and the filed played smoothly and flawlessly.

Now, unfortunately I thought Win 8.1 came with Windows Media Center, it does not. You need a key and you need to purchase it from Microsoft, which they aren't selling any more. So, I did all that, for naught.

Unfortunately with my Cable Companies archaic "DRM" policies, WMC was the only option in order for "Live TV" until some other company comes out with another solution.....

I have to admit that I did not even remember anymore that WMC was not included by default in Windows 8.1. I could have but my latest Windows 8.1 installs happened already couple of years ago, that time you could even get free WMC-keys from Microsoft. Did not know that those keys are not anymore available from MS, although not a big surprise.

If somebody happen to have an unused key and is willing to give/sell it to you, it should still work for activation. Additionally it seem to be possible to use Windows 8 Pro Pack to activate WMC in Windows 8.1 PRO. Those can be found for example in Ebay:

Is there a front end to use with KODI for this? I can "hook" into it and get LiveTV back?

Well I went ahead after I couldn't get WMC in Win8.1 and wiped out the SSD and installed Win10 and the WMC "hack" to get WMC on Win10. WMC works flawlessly on Win10 with that "hack". Unfortunately, I can't get my ceton cablecard to work in WMC. Not sure what is going on there. I've been researching like mad. I've read other places that people have gotten liveTV to work on the WMC/Win10 with the same Ceton CableCard that I have. But, they didn't mention HOW they did it or WHAT they did.
I just recently heard that it won't work after the Anniversary Update to Win10. WMC will install on Win10 but LiveTV / CableCard detection is broken.

So once again, conflicting information.

And, once again, I am back to square one: 10Bit H/W decoding but no LiveTV. I've spent WEEKS on this mess. LoL So have you all. It's crazy.

As this CableCard-issue is a US-thing, this Windows 10 WMC-hack has been working great in my setups in Finland. Hopefully will be solved.

DVR for DRM channels is supposed to come eventually. The official HDHomerun Kodi plugin won't support DRM channels, and likely never will. You could set up Kodi to launch the HDHomerun Windows 10 app for LiveTV. See: https://forum.silicondust.com/forum/view...8&p=288050

You could also setup Kodi to launch the HDHomerun Android app on the Nexus players for that. The current "gray icon" Android app doesn't support DRM. The old "green icon" HDHomerun Android app did, and the "gray icon" app should get it in the future. This is of course for the HDHomerun Prime, and not the Ceton adapter you mentioned earlier.
