my buddy told me about kodi my question is if I have 3 tv locations what gear would I need to have independent control of programming on each tv and do I need remote kido for each tv or does the tv remote work with a lesser version of the kido system or do I need to buy 3 with the remote

Depends what kind of media you're trying to play in them.
A Raspberry pi will do,
And you can use the tv remote if it supports cec.
That's what I use in the bedroom and in my daughter's room.
Only 1 tv has lauzy cec support,
She uses yatse as remote on her phone.
All my media is stored on a server and shared with the pi.
