Intel NUC - Kaby Lake (7th Generation CPU)

Not sure about the latest generation, but there is certainly a big difference in acoustics between the 2. My i5 is virtually silent most of the time however the i7 sounds like a jet engine sometimes :/

I was afraid of that and I doubt the new NUC will be much of an improvement in that part, seeing as it's the same case.

I was considering the i7 because I'll be running AirVideo (an app that converts on the fly and streams my videos to iOS devices). But if it's noisy even when I'm watching a video on Kodi, then that's a deal breaker. I'd have to invest into a whole new silent case and I like the NUC's small footprint.

An i7 is massive overkill if you are just using Kodi, I use an i5 already but 4th generation and it plays anything I throw at it. That is in a fanless case too.

Anyone use the m.2 slot?

Cheap m.2 ssd for windows and a 2.5 HDD for storage or Intel's Optima and a HDD?

I will be doing some transcoding too. But maybe the i5 would need enough anyway.

So new on this, have kodi but on a Android box and to be honest its ok but had to pack it in after the latest kodi update and use my Pi which too is to slow and crashs alot with the latest kodi. Used mostly for addon streaming etc, and IPTV which I am to yet move back on to. So looking at kodi, on a Intel Nuc but not sure where to spend the cash. I have a NAS box which has all my Blu Ray movies on now, keep the original disks clean. So will need HD 1080, but as I am now buying some 4k films which are now also being copied on to the NAS, I need the intel nuc to be capable of play back for this too. I understand Kodi can do this as well. Is this true? I have also a few 3D films on my NAS, and wondering if there are any issues and if capable intel nuc to cover this altogether.
Any idea the best option here? Want to keep the price down as best as possible.

All the latest NUC's should play 4k and 3D stuff fine now.

I've been thinking of a NAS as an alternative to internal storage for the NUC.

Are there any downsides? Specially with 4K?

In theory there shouldn't be any, if all devices are connected with gigabit Ethernet. But reality tends to differ.

can this https://www.amazon.com/INTEL-NUC-Kit-Com...2057441011 and this http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZOTAC-ZBOX-CI327...SwYlRZE0md boot straight into libre-elec and do they have better decoders/better picture quality for all formats including x265 then the odroid c2?

Nope I do this and it works fine, I believe 4K also works fine with 100mbit Ethernet connects as well so its not an issue really.

My NUC boots straight to libre-elec yes. It should work fine with x265 yes assuming you have hardware acceleration on.

do you think the hevc or any video format decoder for this is stronger then the video decoder of the Odroid c2?

There should be no difference between the hardware decode performance of MPEG2, H264 or HEVC decoders on any platform - they either work properly or they don't. (There have been occasional bugs in some implementations - including early S905 revisions ISTR)

Where you can get differences in quality is in upscaling, deinterlacing and post-processing.

We have already been through this in the other thread. I do not know we you are pasting Intel N3450 (Intel Skylake GPU) questions in a Kaby Lake thread.

The Skylake GPU cannot hardware decode 10bit HEVC. For that you need Kaby Lake.
where did i ask if it decodes 10 bit HEVC 4k? so far all i have asked about is files i have are 1080p HEVC, and wrong thread was accidental...thanks for replying Tongue
