There is life in this quality, old hardware yet...
Decided to play around with the MINIX U9 I had stashed away yesterday using the latest CoreELEC Kodi Leia
nightly (click)
On the 8 Core CPU - MINIX U9 - in combo with CE Kodi.
To my great surprise, you can easily ffmpeg Software decode
ALL 1080p h.264 video now, inc....
- 10bit Anime
- Bluray Rips !!
- and the
Kodi Netflix Addon easily streams & plays back smoothly in 1080p (it even does Atmos), plus
- higher picture quality 1080p VP9
- all 8bit 1080p HEVC
- even most low bitrate 10bit HEVC decodes and plays just fine.
From testing it can be seen there has definitely been great improvements in the underlying Multithreaded - ffmpeg code used for Kodi SW decoding in recent months.
It's really impressive the code optimisation that appears to have happened.
For those that want a pretty slick Android TV Nougat v7.1.2 ROM then this is the best going around (includes
Android Kodi HD audio passthru):

The BIG advantage here is there is ROOT Switch in Android Settings.
Downside is there is no WideVine L1 DRM with this ATV ROM.
The ROOT switching then allows you to install the AFRDaemon.apk for Apps – auto Frame Rate Matching & consequently nice smooth video playback:

In the AFRD.apk the only thing I tweak is Settings > Switch Timings > STOP switch delay = 500
Next to uninstall some redundant Apps.
Go into the App Drawer and run the Terminal Emulator App.
Connect a Keyboard and uninstall Google Play Music (it's now redundant) and SmartYouTube:
pm uninstall --user 0 com.firsthash.smartyoutubetv2
pm uninstall --user 0 com.google.android.music
Then install the much more up to date – SmartTubeNext beta (gets rid of YouTube Adverts):

Further speedup tweaks:
ATV Settings > About > Build > click that until Developer Options are enabled then,
ATV Settings > Devices and Preferences > Dev. Options > change all 3 Window/Transition/Animator scale to 0.5x
