Doesn't thumbnail extraction work only once you've played each file? It requires ffmpeg to extract the thumbnail so it's not something that happens during the scrape.

Correct. Assuming you have enabled "extract thumbnails" you will get the thumbnail created on first attempt to play the video,
or when the video is browsed to in file mode (this can be slow if you have many files in a directory, so wait a while.

Scraping the library will not extract thumbnails (it would slow scraping down massively).
