My Solution to this is to give each version an added extension in the file name:
/Kodi Source/Movies/Elf (2003)
'Elf (2003).standard.mkv'
'Elf (2003).widescreen.mkv'
Then Manage...| Edit Title in Kodi and give the appropriate title:
e.g. Elf (Standard) AND Elf (Widescreen) respectively.
Then Manage...| Manage Move Set in Kodi and click the Add movie to a new set
Give the move set the same name as the movie title e.g. Elf
The go the other version and add that to the same set. This will give you one movie in main Kodi view (granted you are showing movie sets) with the two versions inside the collection.
