There is such a thing as a Kodi Box. For example my RPIs run LibreELEC, so all it does is Kodi, so therefore it is a Kodi Box which is a bit less of a mouth full than a Raspberry Pi running Kodi on top of LibreELEC. It's a popular slang term, that is being misused by the media, like Hacker. I have one of these 'boxes' here, someone gave it to me as it kept on 'breaking'. Basically the moody addons fail. It is also riddled with crapware. I keep meaning to have a go at reflashing it. Anyway, when that boots it the first thing you see is a Google TV splash screen. So, correctly they are called Google TV boxes. I wonder how long Google would tolerate it's name being dragged through the mud?
Personally I feel that a lot of these articles in the popular media are just fanning the Pirate's fire. People read them and learn that they can buy one and whilst what they are doing is immoral, it isn't illegal to use one. The only person that is breaking the law is the person uploading the content and maybe the guy that is supplying the box. So of they go and get one as they can't see the bigger picture. If the articles didn't exist how would the general populous find out about them? My Mum isn't going to off reading open source websites about the latest HTPC software, but she reads the Daily Mail. Basically there is no such thing as bad press.
HTPCs: 2 x Chromecast with Google TV
Audio: Pioneer VSX-819HK & S-HS 100 5.1 Speakers
Server: HP Compaq Pro 6300, 4GB RAM, 8.75TB, Bodhi Linux 5.x, NFS, MySQL

I think that should make it a LibreELEC Box.

I did see it. My intention was not to contradict you, but to extend your point that there is no real 'Kodi Box'. OpenELEC was the closest. LibreELEC, with Docker now included, is much more than a 'Kodi Box'. The closest thing to such a box is the Official Kodi case for raspberry pi, which is just a box with the logo on it, not the software, because, one need to purchase a pi and an mSD before being able to install an OS and then Kodi or a JeOS that includes Kodi.
It is unfortunate that they single out Kodi, because it is usually just one of the pieces of software install for viewing these streams. I haven't seen a box lately, but when a friend asked for my opinion about one that he had, back in late 2015, there were about 5 apps. I think one was called ShowBox or something similar.
We are on the same team here. These is no K... Box.
Cheers,
