Hey,

when I use my USB DAC, i get no audio in movies. music works fine.

Audio with analog out or hdmi also works fine for videos.

Any ideas?

Have you enabled omxplayer and disabled mmal?
Have you enabled audio passthrough for the wrong device (hdmi)?

Wow thanks, I never would have found that by myself.
I had omxplayer enabled and mmal disabled. I enabled mmal and now it works.
But I have no idea what either of these options mean and what they imply. If this is not the default setting, probably someone told me to set them a few years ago when I had another problem...
Google also doesn't come up with an explanation in the first results.
Is there an explanation somewhere what exactly they do and what they imply? pros/cons?

Regards,

Murch

By default omxplayer is disabled and MMAL is enabled on Pi2/Pi3
By default omxplayer is enabled and MMAL is enabled on Pi0/Pi1

omplayer use is deprecated on newer Pi models as it doesn't support as many features (no USB audio, no software decode, no DVD menus etc)
But it does have lower cpu usage, so for the more limited Pi0/Pi1 it is the best choice.
Having both enabled means omxplayer will be used when it supports a feature, but it will fall back to mmal when feature isn't supported (e.g. using ALSA).
