I have a 1st gen FTV and was able to pair it's remote! All buttons except for context/menu work.
Also, I tried pairing the Mi remote to my laptop and iPhone but neither see it so it is not going into pairing mode. It looks like that is the key to getting this to work.

Glad it worked for you, you setup is OK. I think the problem is the remote, either faulty or you bought an IR version

I was under the impression that the latest fire tv remote uses WiFi direct for it's connection.

with the original constroller i had to change the nano .config/xiaomibtremote.evmap where KEY_COMPOSE changed to KEY_F5 to microfone button can be remmaped..
