Sorry, but I am not understanding the question.
You mention "the movie database" and I immediately think of TMDB. There are no movies to watch there. It is a scraper site that contains movie information in the same way as IMDB. There are no actual movies to watch.
Maybe explain further if I misunderstood.

when I click the search icon I have an option that says search TheMovieDB but I am unable to watch the movies when I search for them as I think my settings are incorrect

I think you may have misunderstood or been mis-sold what kodi is. It is a media player, not a source of films and TV shows.

I strongly encourage you to click on the link and have a look. You will find NO movies there. It is a site like IMDB. It provides movie information.
Kodi provides no content. That means when you install Kodi, there is no access to any movies, music, photos, tv shows. It is up to you to provide that, normally via content you have saved on your hard disk.
There are add-ons that can provide legal streaming media and they can be searched and found here... https://kodi.tv/addons
