10bit in Linux would be a first for Nvidia. Considering the long wait already, I wouldn't bet on it.

Use CuVid ... which will replace VDPAU, but not in kodi as of now ...
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Hi, is anyone having trouble getting this card to work smoothly with 23.976 fps video when using "Adjust display refresh rate"? No matter what I tried (various driver versions, custom resolutions with manual settings for refresh rates, different Windows versions and Libreelec) I still get a frame skip every 5 minutes or so.  MPC-HC+madVR reports the same thing exactly - a frame drop every 4-7 minutes. The cpu's graphics card on the same pc (Intel HD530) works flawlessly and without any hiccups. Any idea what could be the issue?

I feel like I must be doing something wrong, as I can't get 4K video to play. I bought the GT 1030 specifically for this purpose based on this thread (and others like it) extolling the low cost, modest power requirements, passive cooling, etc. - it sounds perfect!

I tried two different files last night - a 1-minute sample from Mad Max: Fury Road and an LG demo video. In both cases, the video will start playing with tons of stuttering, then completely stop and flake out. They also didn't work in VLC player, so I feel like there must be some fundamental driver or setting I've screwed up. Any tips on how to diagnose or fix this? Are any particular settings required outside of defaults to enable proper 4K playback?

I just built the system, so all drivers were just installed and updated. 1080p video plays fine, and audio is properly passing through to a Denon receiver via HDMI.

OS: Win 7 Pro
Mobo: Asus H100M-E/M.2
CPU: Intel Core i3-6100
GPU: Gigabyte GT 1030 
RAM: 8GB
Nvidia driver: 384.76

ETA: I used the drivers linked on Gigabyte's site for my specific model of GPU, but it seems like those are actually pretty damn old. Is that the likely culprit? 

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. I understand that the problem may be something specific to my build, but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing that's GPU-based.

I'd simply install the latest video drivers. The GT1030 worked okay last time I checked on Win10, it shouldn't be any different on Win7.

Hello,

i'm in the very same situation. I'm a longtime lurker around here and have been using xbmc since 2005 (then kodi on my pc and waiting for Xbox One X more advanced builds).

I have that setup : C2Q6600 / 8gb ram / GT 1030 / Win 7 x64 with latest 390.77 drivers from Nvidia / Onkyo RZ720 (Atmos and passthrough fully working usually)

I see that 4K hevc samples aren't being decoded in hardware by pressing the o key.
1080p hevc ones displays "active". 4K x264 ones too but not 4K hevc.

I got no luck with Leia build compiled on 31st january but files are working with MPC + madvr as external player.
I hope this can get fixed soon.

So I think I may have tracked down my problem. According to a Reddit post (which refers to Kodi's "Supported Hardware" page), you can't play 10-bit HEVC content unless you have an Apollo Lake or Kaby Lake processor, even if your graphics card is otherwise capable. Unfortunately, I have a Sky Lake i3-6100.

Does that sound right?

A proposed solution is to use an external player, but I don't have time to sort that out tonight...
(ETA: Kaby Lake only works with Windows 10?! I run Windows Media Center on my machine, which isn't really supported on W10, so that isn't an option.)

Kodi on Windows 7 does not support HW-decoding for 10-bit Main10 HEVC-files. Windows 8.1/10 is needed for this to work.

Thanks for this precision. If this info was clearly mentionned, i wouldn't have bought this card 3 days ago but a Vero 4K or something like that.

It looks like it'll still work "in" Kodi with an external player. I set up MPC-BE and 10-bit 4K seems to be working well, though I still need to do some more testing to confirm. I more or less followed these instructions.

 Yes, MPC-BE is based on Direct3D 9 and therefore HW-decoding will work, different driver implementation used. Kodi is using Direct3D 11 and needs Feature Level 11.x for HEVC Main10 HW-decoding, related to 16-bit textures needed for decoder. This is supported in Windows 8 and upwards by default but Windows 7 is using FL 9.x where the support for 16-bit textures is unfortunately just optional.

To my knowledge in theory possible if drivers would support this, in practice this is not the case.

I thought I'd share my testing with 2 rigs and 2 GPUs (one of which is a GT 1030), using MPC-BE +madVR for HDR, Kodi for non HDR
Rig 1:
Windows 10 Pro x64 1709
i7 7700K Kaby Lake
32 GB Ram
MSI Z270 PC Mate mainboard
Samsung 960 EVO M.2 system drive
Samsung UE43KS7580 HDR display

Rig 2:
Windows 10 Pro x64 1709
i5 4570 Haswell
8 GB Ram
ASRock Z87M Pro4 mainboard
Samsung 840 EVO SATA system drive
Sony STR-DN1080 AVR through to Acer M550 4K HDR projector

GPUs:
Gigabyte Windforce OC GTX 950 2GB
MSI Low Profile OC GT 1030 2GB

Test 1: Rig 1 + GTX 950
No problems playing any material. 4K60p HDR played well in MPC-BE. 4K60p SDR played flawlessly in Kodi

Test 2: Rig 1 + GT 1030
MPC-BE couldn't handle either HDR or SDR 40K60p material. However, Kodi played 4K60p SDR material fine.
I don't know if the issue is the card or the settings of MPC-BE/madVR. I tried playing with performance settings but never got anything that could play 4K60p HDR or SDR in MPC-BE.

Test 3: Rig 2 + GTX 950
MPC-BE won't play 4K60p HDR or SDR material. Kodi played 40K60p SDR material without problem.


Test 4: Rig 2 + GT 1030
MPC-BE won't play 4K60p HDR or SDR material. Did not try Kodi.

Results:
The ability to play 40K60p SDR or HDR is not a limitation of GPU memory as far as I can see. 
The older GTX 950 can handle 4K60p HDR when paired with Kaby Lake, but not Haswell.
The GT 1030 can't handle 4K60p HDR.

Given that MPC-BE is not doing scaling in this tests, and is passing through HDR data, I wonder if there is something else going on. Why should it handle 4K60p SDR with no problem, but not HDR? It's not doing any processing of HDR; just passing meta data to the display.

As things stand, I don't think we can say yet that a GT 1030 is unable to handle 4K60p HDR. I need to find an alternative to MPC-BE/madVR to be certain.
