So in those circumstances people will go with their instincts and belief in people's intentions and honesty. And the way I see it, that is what is the main issue here. Not copyright law, license agreements or what legally constitutes an idea or invention.
I am not defending OP wanting to use a non-derivative license, but I do think he has the right to feel betrayed and can understand it to a certain extent.
Totally agree. I'm not sure what was taken, but it is a pretty low blow to release something to a handful of testers and have someone lift ideas out of it before its even finished. It was the same thing on _djh's new Aeon project where the list view was being copied in the AeonMQ mod as soon as there was a screenshot of it. I mean, give creators the chance to fully realise their ideas first before you go helping yourself to them!!!
I think the fact that it is a hobby project makes the betrayal even more personal and harder to take. Hundreds of hours spent crafting something that you feel extremely proud of, so you want to share what you've done and then someone lifts your ideas immediately, it really cheapens the time and dedication put into a project.
It is like if you had spent time hand carving a set of wooden chess pieces and as soon as someone saw them they made some crappy 3d printed replica. Some would say you should take it as flattery, but all it really does is makes it feel like what you have painstakingly crafted is being treated like some worthless made in China junk.
With all that said, I think this is way more an issue about trust and courtesy rather than licenses and restrictions. It really is a shame that there are a small minority who seem to struggle with the concept of attribution and the common courtesy of politely asking first. Seeders versus leeches I guess...
