You don't have to root it lol. Just enable developer mode.

They only implement AC3, EAC3 via RAW API. Kodi chooses the IEC API, where they refuse to open 8 channels. Let's hope IEC API works as it should, then you should have DTS, AC3, EAC3 - so DTS more than with the RAW API. DTS-HD / TrueHD is supported with no method - using my enumeration code.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I just got the 4k HDR optional ethernet is still 100 no 1gb.
kodi 17.4 has the options for passthough DTS-HD and True HD but there is no sound when playing.
kodi 17.5 doesn't have the options so passes through DTS

no problem sideloading with adbLink

Kodi 17.5 checks the capabilities and removes those "not working". 17.4 just displays what "could be implemented".

I was getting terrible performance watching h264 hd content. Sluggish in menus and stuttering low frame rate in playback using 17.5. I was quite disappointed

I don't think anyone should get this for serious Kodi use. All audiophile/videophile things don't work.
1) No refresh rate switching in Kodi, Amazon Prime or Netflix.
2) Only Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital Plus/Dolby Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus) passthrough works. I didn't even get DTS passthrough to work.
3) ?No PCM output possible from Kodi even when passthrough is turned off (Probably have to turn off Dolby Digital audio in FireTV settings for PCM only output).
4) BT.2020 colorspace is always enabled when you set the color depth to 10/12-bit (when connected to a display that supports BT.2020).
5) There is an option for 12-bit output, I didn't see it work.
6) There is the reported HDR issue which Amazon is already blaming on the AVRs. (I personally think that this is a Amlogic bug which has been reported on some of the older SDK firmwares).

Edits:
  • DTS passthrough worked after a reboot or so.
  • PCM output works only when Dolby Digital audio is turned off in FireTV settings. It is sending Multichannel PCM output, but there is audio only in the LR channels.
  • 12-bit is applicable only for 1080/720p. The output is actually YCbCr 4:4:4 or RGB.
  • I know what is happening with HDR. You could say that this is the fault of AVRs. When BT.2020 color space is enabled, it is also sending the Dynamic Range and Mastering InfoFrame with "Traditional Gamma - SDR Luminance" data type. This is likely confusing the AVRs. I haven't seen this with other media players, but this is actually within CTA 861-F/G specs.

We really were not expecting much for a Kodi Box - its a paid for Amazon Video, Netflix and Android Apps streaming device and that is about it.

Reading the review the Amazon main screen GUI even pushes unwanted advertising to users. Sad

I would be interested to see if the Bootloader is unlocked, which could be tested by trying to root the Firmware with a .zip file called Magisk 14.0, flashed from Android recovery. You could possibly put LibreELEC on a USB stick then and give it a go.

let me add to this. I'm going back to the 2gen fire tv. The wife can use this 3gen in the workout room.
optional ethernet adapter is still 100mb no 1gb too slow to play 60gb 4k movies, i wouldn't have bought it had i known for sure but amazon info didn't tell you the speed
wireless is slower than the 2nd gen wireless (at least the 2nd gen you can play 60gb movies over wireless)
there is zero atmos content for the time being. I side loaded vudu app 2nd gen show on the avr as atmoss but it cut in and out. 3gen just showed dolby digital+
anyone got a suggestion, i'm listening.
any hardware out there do this list?
1gb ethernet
kodi
Truehd and DTS-HD
4k
netflix
playstation vue

Yes it's called a NVIDIA Shield Wink
But beware of colorspace issues for mixed 1080p / 4K HDR Kodi with Auto Resolution switching.

Buying devices without an Ethernet port for 4K High Bitrate Kodi - people are just fooling themselves IMHO. What may work for one individual will be complete rubbish for another.
WiFi only and wanting reliable high Bitrate 4K streaming can lead to all sorts of problems and compromises.

4K Netflix, 4K Amazon Video, 4K Youtube are relatively low bitrate HEVC or VP9 streams by comparison.

I very much doubt that. I will give it a try later tonight or tomorrow.

Android recovery, in the absence of a Reset Button on AMLogic Hardware can be booted into by using a Android Terminal App and issuing a "reboot recovery"
Similarly a "reboot update" can initiate LibreELEC initial installs from a USB stick.
