I upgraded my Linux box to Ubuntu 16.04 today. It no longer boots to the KODI interface it books to the standard Linux desktop with the KODI image in the top right. Help!

You need to provide more details. Does kodi work if you start it manually? If yes, you should simply log out of the desktop and select the kodi session.
Otherwise provide the output of:
apt policy kodi kodi-bin | pastebinit

and a Debug Log
