1. Complete Debug log (wiki) (Use your favourite paste site! See below.) << NOT OPTIONAL!
>> I have none as it is an installation issue, fresh installation

2. If you can, get screenshots to illustrate problems (See below)
>> $ sudo apt-get install kodi kodi-bin
>>
>> Reading package lists... Done
>> Building dependency tree
>> Reading state information... Done
>> Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or >> been moved out of Incoming.
>> The following information may help to resolve the situation:

>> The following packages have unmet dependencies:
>>  kodi : Depends: libass5 but it is not installable or libass4 but it is not installable
>> E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

3. Latest is not a revision, of anything! (See below)
>> Kodi 17.5

4. Linux Distribution and version (See below)
>> Ubuntu 17.10

5. Hardware (e.g.. i686, x86_64, GPU (See below)
>> x86_64

6. Install Method (PPA, RPM, build.sh, manual, other)
>> PPA

7. Determining GIT revision (See below.)
8. Troubleshooting 101 - Determining if a addon or skin is causing the issue (See below)
9. Detailed instructions to reproduce the problem (The more specific the better.)
10. Backtrace (Only attainable if Kodi has crashed. See below.)
11. Compiler output (Only useful if Kodi doesn't build. See below.)

I don't know how I can give more information, let me know...

Thanks for your help

get us the following output(s):

Code:
apt-cache policy kodi | pastebinit
Code:
apt-cache policy libass5
Code:
cat /etc/lsb-release | pastebinit

And please, redo the installing process and either make a screenshot from the error message you will get, or paste it without editing. We always need the full, non edited, messages.

I guess, Ubuntu 17.10 doesn't ship libass5. But I'm not sure.

Guys, I can confirm it works now. You made my day ! Thanks !

BTW, Ubuntu 17.10 doesn't ship libass5 indeed.

PS: can/should I mark this as solved somehow?

First I'm curious why you want to compile an outdated Kodi version. The Krypton branch should be at 17.6.

But anyway...we need at least to know on which OS you want to compile Kodi on.
