Buffering/pixelation on Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+?
#1
I'm attempting to watch Recordings within pvr.wmc on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ and encounter regular buffering and pixelation.  I'm running latest stable Kodi 17.6 and just did a fresh install from the Android Play Store.  It looks to be reproducible on another Galaxy S8 phone I have available as well.  I have a Chromebox (OE), RPi2 (OE), Windows 7 desktop, Android Samsung tablet all working fine utilizing the same backend server.wmc and even playing the same recording I tested.  Only the S8 phones have issues.
Has anyone else seen this with their Android phones, specifically the S8/S8+?  I'm not certain if it's a 64-bit arch issue, buffer size issue, FFmpeg issue, or something else entirely.

For log review times:
11:02 - started Kodi on S8+ and started NFL Football All Star Game
11:03 - first buffering issue
11:05 - I performed a seek/FF/RW and saw more buffering,
11:06 - Continued pixelation that didn't really recover

I have not heard of it before.   Hopefully someone will have a better idea, but in the things to try department, try turning off hardware acceleration in kodi on the s8 and see what happens.  Also are your other clients using a wired connection?

Chromebox and RPi2 are wired, Android Tablet is wireless. My S8 is new, but my previous Android Motorola Droid Turbo worked perfectly with serverWMC a month+ ago. I'll try disabling HW Accel next. If you're thinking this is more of a Kodi question than a PVR question, I can go ask in another spot. Thanks for the reply.

Just tried disabling HW Acceleration, no difference. Thanks for the suggestion. Is there anything in the Kodi Log I provided that is useful?

There is nothing in the swmc log.  The kodi log I am not good at reading, it seems to be complaining a lot in there about the wtv playback but I don't know how serious it is.  To determine if it is a wtv/s8/kodi issue, try loading the wtv you are testing directly into kodi by adding it as a video.  This will bypass swmc completely.  See if it has the same issue.

I added the test file as a video via NFS. Seemed to work better, but that is preliminary. I wasn't able to add the video via SMB, no SMB sources found on my network (broken in Krypton?)

Doesn't seem like SMB can be broken because that's how kodi/pvr.wmc access the recorded tv folder.

SMB browser didn't work, I did play the test file by entering SMB://path and it worked. Still buffering and pixelated. Thanks for all of the replies, but looks like a Kodi/phone issue unless you can think of anything else.

So from here you can submit it as a bug to the kodi team and give them a link to the test file, telling them which version of kodi and the problem is on an s8 only.  Make sure they know its a problem with kodi playing the file directly.

Just to close on this for anyone that finds it.  I ended up getting the Oreo upgrade for my S8+, and the issue has disappeared.  I didn't upgrade anything else and am not rooted.  Running Oreo 8.0.0 and Kodi 17.6.
