Wondering what you guys are using to convert recorded ota tv shows from mpeg 2 to h264?
I'd prefer a app that could do it on the fly or at the very least after it finishes recording but without human intervention watching my recorded folder. I've heard of mcebuddy but am hoping for a free app.

When I need to do it, I use ffmpeg. However, I usually keep everything in MPEG2 and only convert when sharing/archiving the program.
If I need to do it on the fly, I use ffmpeg's h264_vaapi encoder with the integrated Intel GPU for speed, but without a higher-end card I find it difficult to get good results when encoding 4+ live streams at once.

ffmpeg seems like the right app but looks like you have to ship it manually

I used to do this manually with handbrake.
Some backends integrate this function. If you use dvblink, then you can now use the ‘sendto’ function that automates the conversion/transfer.
