One of my friend recommend me to use removed because he told me that streaming through kodi is illegal and there is a chance that I may receive DMCA notice. Is that true? or any other alternates available?

There is no need for a VPN when Kodi is used for its legitimate and designed purpose. If you are using 3rd party piracy banned addons (wiki) then you are not using kodi as it was designed, and you're on your own and responsible for any repercussions that may happen.
