You need to install proper drivers. Kodi doesn´t support nouveau. I guess that you might have some NVidia GPU probably. Depending on your window manager navigate to the Ubuntu settings and search for the entry "additional drivers" and select the proprietary NVidia driver if available.

In the meantime I've had re-installed Ubuntu and Kodi, had issues with stuttering videos... but your hint put me in the right direction - disabled Nouveau drivers and installed the recent NVidia drivers.
