hi kodi 17 works flawlesly but when i try kodi 18 for live tv (uk freeview hd) i only get sound in sd television chanels when switching to hd picture but no sound.

Sounds good, Leia is in Alpha, and there's likely some issues to be ironed out. Provide a proper debug log (check my signature at the bottom for the link) for us to look at.
