After years of painfree, now can't connect client to WMC server
#1
After years of virtually pain-free operation, I can't get my WMC server to get connected to any Kodi or OpenElec clients.

Setup has been running literally for years, no real issues.  WMC on a win 7 server, 6 HDHomeRun tuners, 3 (sometimes 4) Kodi and OpenElec clients.
Everything worked painlessly - no issues.
Then within the last day or so, clients stop connecting to the WMC server.  Nothing changed - I barely ever touch the server.

WMC starts up as always, connects to the tuners, recordings, etc.  Just never gets any client connections from any of the clients.

Wondering if some sort of automatic windows network or security update fubar'd the setup?  I run Avast free security on that machine, and wonder if it autoupdated - it's possible I clicked past an update screen without noticing when I was troubleshooting, though this behaviour is new even though I've gone through Antivirus updates before.

Any body else experiencing issues??

I tried turning off Windows firewall (shiver), but that didn't seem to help.

Here's log files from when it was working fine:  https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hQWFdgJ5Rk/   https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hrBxjjVpVj/     https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/nM477WSpbj/   https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/mvRcbhnPRf/

Here's a log file from now, no connections:  https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/j2CcrKb28q/

No clue what could be happening.  As I said, it just stopped working.  Interestingly, I use Teamviewer to manage the server, and that has recently been slow to connect, transfer flies, etc.  Lot's of spinning hourglasses (or kaleidscope equivalents on the Mac).  Not sure if it's related, but just thought I'd add the info.

Any help appreciated - need to get this up an working again soon or the (family) natives will get even more restless!

Has your WMC server (auto)updated to Samba SMBv2 recently, abandoning of the now deprecated SMBv1 protocol?

By 'no connection', I assume you mean that swmc is not even getting a socket connection to the clients (these are the connections that you see on the status panel of swmc).  That usually due to security software or possibly something else is now using the port swmc uses (default is 9080).  It won't be the windows firewall since it was working before.  So I think its either an update to avast or the port.  I bet its the former.  I'd try disabling avast for an experiment.  Its not an update of swmc, I still haven't gotten around to that.

I'm not sure on this one - how would I check if I'm on SMBv2, and when it was updated?

Removed Avast, now things are connecting.  Interestingly, SWMC shows 0 channels sent to clients (lots of timers and recordings are transferred).  The channel and on-screen guide on the clients seem fine, so wondering why the counter for channels would be 0?

So I'm now in search of a better security solution for the server.  What do folks recommend?

The channel thing is a bug, right after kodi requests the tv channels it requests the radio channels (which for almost everybody is 0) so the tv channel count is getting overridden by the radio count.  I just fixed this, thanks for pointing it out.  This bug must have been there for a long time, shows how little people pay attention to the status screen!

Absolutely love this setup - been a loyal user (and contributor).

While we're on the topic, how do I get my SWMC back to successfully updating?  It can't seem to make a successful connection to the host to check for updates - "could not create SSL/TLS secure connection" ...

And my other thought is ... this Windows 7 / wmc server setup isn't going to be supported by MS for much longer I would guess?  What other server setup options are there?   What should I be planning for?

The auto update is broken in the current release of swmc because of a security change at github where the software is distributed from.  If you download the preview version of swmc (you'll need to manually install it) it fixes the issue or just wait for the next non-preview release.

As for other pvr software there is a lot to choose from and I have no experience with any of them.  Better to take this up in the forum above this one, or just search the thread as this question gets asked all the time.  Since epg123 I personally don't worry about ms support.
