Dolby Atmos Audio Dropout After 10-15 Minutes of Playback?
#1
When watching a movie, after 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted playback (ie no chapter skipping, pauses, RW/FF) Dolby Atmos audio just cuts out completely. This happens with all videos that have Atmos audio. I can get the audio to come back simply by skipping back a chapter but obviously this is annoying. Also, there are random 1 frame audio dropouts that happen 1-3x during the course of a full length movie, also only happens with Dolby Atmos. I'm using Kodi/DSPlayer/madVR on a Win10 machine to Denon receiver to TV. What could be causing this? Almost seems like some sort of audio timeout is happening.

@aerodynamic

You will need to provide a debug log. Full instructions are in my signature below, but here is a quick guide...

  1. Enable Debugging mode. Go to Settings>System Settings>Logging and it should be the first option
  2. Restart Kodi
  3. Replicate the problem. In your case, keep playing the movie until you experience the audio dropouts a couple of times
  4. Upload the results to https://pastebin.com/ or https://paste.ubuntu.com/ and link back here.
Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs

This forum is for support for core Kodi. You will have to take your concerns to the DSPlayer thread. Such an issue is likely inherent in the rip you are watching. Some rips created with MakeMKV have reported random drop-outs with Atmos tracks. It is unknown what may cause this.

To rule out DSPlayer, try using MPC-BE with the same file (not MPC-HC as it uses the same audio renderer as DSPlayer). The problem is most likely the rip as bitstreaming leaves the job of decoding to the receiver, not the video player.

I googled your issue. Maybe this is the problem? Who knows?

This quote is likely most telling.

Nevcairiel (developer of LAV Filters):

"Atmos bitstreaming is not fully understood. If the bitrate exceeds a certain limit, it breaks apart, because its not known how to handle that. This was never a problem with ordinary TrueHD since the bitrate doesn’t get high enough. Unfortunately the specifications for that are not available anywhere online (not even to buy), since its not part of the IEC standard that usually controls HDMI bitstreaming. So if anyone knows how Dolby MAT (Metadata-enhanced Audio Transport) works - the format used to wrap TrueHD and Atmos for HDMI transmission, please let me know. Smile"

I am seeing the same issue with the Incredibles 2 atmos track. I tried with DSplayer, MPC-HC using Lav 0.73.1 and with the latest MPC-BE.

Anyone experiencing the same?

Other users are reporting similar issues in the MakeMKV forum:

https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic....12&t=18349

But it seems this may not be related to LAV since one user reported the same with a MKV file played with the Oppo.
