Trouble finding "Extras" inside Zip archive
#1
Hello all,

I have the Add-on:Extras installed, and the "Extras" directory set to zip://Extras.

Here's my advancedsettings.xml.

Here's my library directory structure.

Here's my videoextras.nfo.

The problem is that I'm now having duplicate Movie entries and no Extras show up.
Duplicate entries: https://imgur.com/a/mZ2j82m
No Extras: https://imgur.com/a/1B60NQJ

Can someone please tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

P.S. In case anyone is curious as to why I choose to store my media files in Zip archives. The file systems of the various NAS devices I use don't support Linux file permissions. I prefer my file and directory permissions to be 0644 and 0775 respectively. Storing them in an archive preserves said permissions.

Hello @clonemaster

A little bit confused. I think you might be using a different "Extras" Add-on. Can you give me the link to where you downloaded it from.

Thanks.

Right, ok. Thanks.

Well, I am confused at what you have done.

1. Advanced Settings - OK
2. Directory Structure - Seems OK, but I have never used subfolders in the Extras folder, so don't know if that works or not.
3. Videoextras.nfo - What is this? Where did you read that led you to create it?
4. zip://Extras - What is this? How are you using this and what goes in it?

Can you explain 3 & 4 thanks, as these seem to be the problem.

Also, just noticed that you have the movie in both mkv and zip format. Kodi will read both of these and scrape both into the library.

#3 - https://github.com/robwebset/script.vide...snfo-files - upon closer review, this is a different addon

#4 - Isn't zip:// the correct way to traverse a zip archive? - https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid1703651

The MKV contained files are inside the zip file.

3. Oooh, yes, #3 is definitely a different add-on, and one that is banned from this forum, which is why I asked which addon you were using. So, get rid of the nfo file. Though having it there makes no difference as Kodi ignores it as it does not know what it is.

4. 10 points for doing the research first, but that is a 4 year old post so probably does not apply (sorry didn't read that thread to get context).

If you changed any settings in the Extras Add-on to accommodate the zip files, then change them back to their default. In your case, it looks like you are using Extras as the subfolder, so change it back to Extras.

The zip file... what does that contain? Does it contain another copy of the movie or does it contain another copy of the Extras files, or both?

We should also determine what Kodi is scraping for those additional listings in the Movie Library. Using Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999) as the example here, can you go and check the path of each of those listings, and post back what they are, as shown in the image. Call up the Movie Information screen and highlight the Refresh button..

It might be a case that the Extras add-on is working fine, and the additional movie listings are something else.

So I changed the extras directory back to the default "Extras" and that seems to have fixed the duplicate entries. Check one off!

Here's the file path: https://imgur.com/a/2xzz1gN

I got rid of the videoextras.nfo and moved the files out of subdirectories under Extras, and put them directly into the Extras directory.
Here's the revised contents of the zip archive: https://pastebin.com/ZQxAgHRQ
However, still nothing shows up when I click the Extras menu.

Oh right. I see what you have done. You have created the entire folder and file structure, then zipped it into one zip file. Sorry, didn't pick up on that earlier.

I don't know if that will work. I have never tried that.

Let me try and replicate...

No, that does not work. The Extras folder will not be visible to the Add-on if it is inside the zip file.

I know you don't want to be asked, but I will... Why?

Why are you going to the effort of zipping everything? Then you place more load and time delays to unzip it every time you want to access it?

Zipping will not save you any extra space in most cases, especially not with codecs of the current era. If it does, you are only talking about kilobytes of savings. mkv is already a type of zip file, so you are zipping a zipped file.

I strongly urge you to stick with the traditional folder format.

I appreciate all the time and help you've given me, I really wanted this to work, but oh well. I'm just archiving the files, not compressing them and I'm trying to preserve the Linux file permissions of the media. I've used Kodi for many years, but now I've decided to stop using pirated videos and buy and rip (no transcoding) my own collection. Also I've never used the "Extras" addon until now. I want to preserve the file permissions because I'm redundantly backing up my media across multiple devices. Non of the NAS devices I have display the correct date and time for the files; they change them once I transfer them onto their file system.

Thanks again!

A new type of Extras Addon was submitted to the repo a few weeks ago. It does things a bit differently and has a lot more skin integration with flags showing when extras are available for a title. Might be worth asking if they support your requirements
