v18 [nVidia SHIELD TV] DTS-HD HR passthrough not working
#1
Kodi v18 "Leia" Alpha 1
SHIELD Experience 7.0

DTS-HD HR audio tracks do not play properly (no audio received by AVR).
Tested it with several DTS-HD HR audio tracks, including the following sample file:
http://www.demo-world.eu/

DTS-HD MA audio tracks however are no problem. Furthermore VLC is able to play the exact same file using passthrough just fine.

Audio settings:
  • Number of channels: 7.1
  • Output Konfiguration: Best match
  • Allow passthrough: enabled
  • All other passthrough options: enabled
Player settings:
  • Adjust display refresh rate: On start/stop
  • Sync playback to display: off
System settings:
  • Delay after change of refresh rate: 0.4 seconds

Debug log:

To receive meaningful assistance you will need to provide a full debug log.

The instructions are here... debug log (wiki)

If you are using the Basic Method, then ensure the following is applied...
1.Enable debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging,
2.Restart Kodi
3.Replicate the problem.

If you are using the Advanced Method ensure you have correctly created and applied the advancedsettings.xml file.

In both instances, you should see the word DEBUG throughout the log.

Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs
Do NOT post your logs directly into the forum. Always use a paste site like pastebin.com. Post the link to your pasted log in the forum

I've replaced the partial log with a full log output.

Known bug - if you have time, please implement it: https://trac.kodi.tv/ticket/17886
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I would if I had the time for it.
To help me understand what would have to be done: would we 'just' have to integrate a new FFMPEG version?

No. You need to change the way DTS-HD-HR is packet and sent. Newer AVRs since ~ 1.5 years all share the same dump DTS detection version and only recognize DTS-HD-HR when sent 192/2 - kodi packs them into 192/8. It's not a bug in kodi btw. still works fine on my older AVR (Marantz NR140x) - though we probably will adapt some time in the future ... btw. just disable DTS-HD, kodi can decode it lossless.

I just tried that file and it played for me. This was with the latest nightly, Shield and a Denon AVR 4300. Came up as dts-hd hi-res in the amp display.

Your Debug Log won't be a single bit different than the OP's - that's the culprit here. Some AVRs understand DTS-HD-HR oder just playback DTS-CORE.

The revised IEC-61937-5 standard that defines DTS bitstream transport will be published in July 2019. Also see the revised ETSI TS 102 114 1.5.1. Some DSP manufacturers have jumped the gun.

2019 or 2018?

So what is actually correct according to the spec? One IEC 60958 line (2 channels) for DTS-HD HR bitstreams as the LAV developers implemented it in their fix or 4 IEC 60958 lines (8 channels)?

I am using KODI 18.0-ALPHA2 Git:20180530-d0cc291 - May 31 2018 and I can play DTS-HD HR without any issues.

Which means you have an older AVR or one that hasn't been affected by the new IEC-61937 standard.

There is not really a new IEC standard ... it's just AVRs with shitty DTS firmware by the very same firmware writing company are getting more widespread :-)

I thought it was because they were using, what will be, the 3rd edition of IEC-61937-5? It's just not published yet unlike the 3rd edition of IEC-61937-3 which was published last year.

I'll take your word for it, just seems to be some conflicting info around.
