Could someone explain to me the difference between watching live TV (or in-progress recording) and playback of the same material after recording is completed? Something must be different as the live/streaming H.264/AC3 stream causes my MiBox to stutter/freeze while playback of the file doesn't experience these problems.

When you watch live tv, or active recordings, swmc is repackaging the wtv file as a ts file on the fly, that's because kodi cannot handle a wtv file that is growing. I have no experience with the miBox so I don't know why it is giving you different results. If the problem is specific to h264 you could try messing with kodi's hardware acceleration settings on the miBox. Another long shot is to change this setting in swmc and see if it makes a difference. In the settings file, look for GenerateDTS_h264 and set it to false, ex:
<GenerateDTS_h264>false</GenerateDTS_h264>
then save the settings file and restart swmc.
