Hi,
With the stock cooler, did it make a lot of noise with 4k, 60p? Normally all is HW decoded, so that shouldn't stress the CPU. 42db is not to be ignored for a HTPC, the question is: will it do that while playing heavy bitrate videos?

Did you test 4k, HDR with Kodi v18?
Does it work? I assume you're running Kodi in Windows.

If 'wrxtasy' is reading:
If I'm correct, there's no auto switching between HDR and SDR in Windows right? Are the colors even properly displayed in HDR?
Windows 10 Pro (64bit), Kodi v19.1 "Matrix"
Intel NUC8i3BEH (Samsung 970 Evo, G. Skill Ripjaws 8GB)
Samsung UE49KS7000, Logitech Harmony remote 350
AudioEngine D1, Synology DS218j NAS (SMB protocol)

I’m thinking of getting the NUC8i3 for a Win10 Kodi HTPC.

From what I understand it has no problem handling 4K HDR which is my target. The i3 seems to also run more quietly than the i5/i7 models and is also cheaper. Correct me if I’m wrong about something. [emoji5]

No problems with 4K UHD..

..and only audible with the ear on the stock NUC8i5. You have ~42db(A) only while heavy load (stresstest). I think, the NUC8i3 has similar power to the NUC8i5.

Linux seems to work just fine: https://communities.intel.com/thread/129540 if one can trust the comments
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Probably worth trying one with one of the Milhouse libreelec builds if anyone is interested in trying Linux (and hdr)?

Hopefully fanless cases don’t take too long to appear, I’m not sure I could go back to an htpc with a fan after I put my haswell NUC into an Akasa case.

Power consumption NUC8i5:

00,7 W: Off
01,2 W: Standby
03,8 W: Idle Windows Desktop
43,0 W: Stresstest
69,0 W: Stresstest while Intel Turbo Boost
47,5 W: Handbrake Encoding Task (Screenshot)

..so i think it will take a while until a fanless case appear...take a look at Cooling Head for Intel® NUC (project diary).

Can’t remember where HDR is on NUCs with Linux at the moment. I thought milhouse builds had it working, how about the libreelec nightlies?

No HDR output on Linux yet, all that is available is tone mapping HDR to SDR which is available under video settings while playing something.

How about audio? HDMI pass through working for Atmos and DTS-HDMA etc? Multichannel PCM?

May be time to buy one...

Looks very similar to Estuary in terms of font, colours, layout etc so I would guess it's one of the mods.

So if I'm reading this correctly, the Coffee lake still went with the LSPCON DP -> HDMI converter for the HDMI port, does this affect the 4k or HDR content?
Feels like 1 more generation of NUCs and they might have it right...? Think Bean Canyon is really just Coffee Lake 1.5, so assume the same LPSCON config, but don't think there's a need for going the route of the Hades Canyon just to properly do 4k/60 and HDR content.
So many choices! Smile
