I am doing the Afrikaans translation for KODI, and can not find where the movie genre strings (e.g. Action, Adventure, Animation, Biography...) are stored, so I can translate them.
Would expect them to be in kodi-core, but can't find them there or in the skins...

Any ideas?

Those strings are coming from the site you use for scraping. Either you have to adjust the language of the scraper or update the scraper if your language currently isn't available for section in the scraper settings, but the site supports your language.
