What type of subtitle file is embedded? Also SRT or some other type?
A debug log (wiki) is also welcome. Smile

Same here with DVD subtitles and DVB ones for IPTV (using kodi-18.0-0.19.rc2.fc29.x86_64 add on). Fedora 29, kodi-18.0-0.19.rc2.fc29.x86_64.

Next time, please enable debugging first, restart Kodi, and then reproduce the error(s) and provide the new debug log (wiki).
Right now, there is no single instance of an internal/embedded '.srt' to be found in the log file as there is no media info of the mkv file.

It may sound sound trivial, but a full debug log (wiki) can still help. Our crystal ball is useless in these "metoo post" cases.

I was sure you've already got more than enough of them logs to start off. Anyways, there you go, another fine log: https://paste.kodi.tv/cokeyabeya.kodi

so then, here's the proper log:   https://paste.kodi.tv/pocuxicobe.kodi
media info: https://paste.kodi.tv/naheveveko
external sub (idx/sub) gives this: file:///home/peter/Downloads/screenshot000.png
standard sub gives this: file:///home/peter/Downloads/screenshot001.png

and now?

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that I am also facing this problem, but with idx/sub subtitles. The issue occurs on v18 but not on v17, using the same files.

I'm also getting this. There's a line in the log:
txt:
Code:
2019-03-31 15:09:02.112 T:139640719795968   DEBUG: ffmpeg[7F00A37FE700]: [matroska, webm] Could not find codec parameters for stream 3 (Subtitle: hdmv_pgs_subtitle (pgssub)): unspecified size

For Kodi 18 I think that's the issue. Files that show subtitles don't show that message. Seems like it is a ffmpeg issue... (also dunno why previous log files didn't have the same line in them)

Happening to me as well and can't find anything about it other than on this thread. Has anyone found a solution to this?

Seems like 18.2 fixed this issue for me.
