2018 - Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K

Besides setting the refresh rate to "On Start/Stop" the only thing I have changed is the audio to passthrough 5.1. I have the same settings on my firetv box (2nd gen) and it plays everything perfectly. My only guess is that the Fire OS's auto refresh rate switching isn't playing nice with Kodi's. Is anyone else having this problem or did I get a faulty 4k StickHuh

I first tried Kodi 17.6. Then Leia, and now I'm back to 17.6 again. No luck on any

I thought I would give more information on my setup since others are having problems. My TV reports these modes to kodi - 1920x1080p 60, 59.94, 24 and 23.98 Hz. These are all whitelisted.

I tried to use the amazon x-ray debugger but had trouble enabling it with the remote. I eventually downloaded the Developer Tools app to turn it on.

Here are the results of the x-ray HDMI mode when playing the test files:

FPS_test_1080p23.976_L4.1 = 1080p, 23.97
FPS_test_1080p24_L4.1 = 1080p, 24
FPS_test_1080p29.97_L4.1 = 1080p, 59.93
FPS_test_1080p50_L4.2 = 1080p, 59.93
FPS_test_1080p59.94_L4.2 = 1080p, 59.93
FPS_test_1080p60_L4.2 = 1080p, 60 (video playback problem)

The anomaly is the the 60Hz test file shows a frame rate switch with x-ray, but the file itself is not actually played by kodi.  I just get the endless spinner as the file tries to load.

Easiest way is through Kodi. Apps > Android apps.

Thanks!

The TV I tested with is 1080p so I can't verify that.
 Can you try with fire tv stick setted to 720p and playing 1080p file?

Thanks again Wink

 It doesn't work well with the Fire TV set to 720p/60Hhz. Kodi doesn't load at all - no splash screen even after I clear the Kodi cache. After a reboot, I sometimes get the splash screen and then a blank screen. I don't want to lose all my settings so I didn't try a complete reset of Kodi.

Having the exact same issues as others with 24fps content in Kodi 17.6 with the Fire TV Stick 4K.  Super laggy and completely unwatchable when frame rate switching is enabled.  Don't have this issue with any of my second gen Fire TV Sticks.    Haven't bothered with any of the betas as others here say the same thing happens.  Real bummer because otherwise the 4K stick performs a lot better than the second gen.

... scratch that.  I just tried the latest beta of Leia anyway and so far so good.

I just saw that the Leia Beta 5 released around the same time I tried Leia on mine. Not sure if I tried Beta 4 or 5, so I'll try it tonight and see if that fixes my issue with 24p content.

***UPDATE***
After installing the Leia Beta 5 it seems that the problem with 24p content is fixed...but now it won't play 4k (which I didn't have a problem with before). When I play a 4k video, it switches the resolution to 4k for a second, then returns me to the home screen for a second, then plays the video correctly but in 1920x1080 resolution. I have all the resolutions whitelisted except for the 720 ones.

***UPDATE 2***
I removed everything from the Whitelist and now it is switching to the correct frame rates and playing smoothly.

I have a question though. If I let the movies/shows play at 24p, with the auto frame rate switching, is that better than letting it go to my QLED (2017 Q7f) at 60p (auto frame switching off)? I prefer smooth motion

Does Kodi on the new stick do hd audio (atmos specifically)?

No, the stick does not pass through HD audio, it will stream Atmos DD+ from apps though and it will decode True HD and DTS-HD to multi channel pcm.
Hope this makes sense.

What's the benefit of passing through Bitstream instead of deciding to pcm? Like what will I miss?

what you will miss is Full True HD Dolby Atmos and DTS HD:X as decoding to PCM discards the meta data.
