2018 - Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K
(2020-09-26, 11:40)fritsch Wrote: I think they won't care about the 4K stick anymore. Reason: No one bought the cube ;-) besides you "advanced / expert" user guys, everyone who just wanted netflix / prime with 4K just got the cheap FireTV 4K stick and the Cube ... not. Too expensive for the additional value of average joe.
Considering they didn't feel the need to replace it with a new model, I think they have to care. Considering the 2 new sticks run FireOS 7 and have lower specs than the 4K Stick, I think there's a good chance we will get an update to FireOS 7 and the new UI by the end of this year before they roll out a new 4K stick in 2021.

My argument is a different one:
If they really want to push the cube, then they would not release another 4K firetv stick, but let it die and then sell more cubes. It's pure speculations. We can directly see that when the new UI would be released to the Cube but not to the 4K stick.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I think a lot of people avoid the Cube because it costs way more, isn't that powerful and has microphones built into it for Alexa type speech commands. I think the reason the 4K stick wasn't replaced with a 2nd gen 4K stick is because the 4K stick is selling just fine. The 4K Stick has 307,000 reviews and the Cube has only 17,000 reviews.

I think the 1080p stick was replaced with 2 (why?) 1080p Fire Sticks because it had performance issues which led to negative reviews.

You tell the same I do. No one buys the Cube - so if we assume amazon has already produced some 100 millions of it ... what should they do?
As long as people prefer the 4K chip which is a lot cheaper, they will sit on their cubes ... so for me the only reason why the released two new 1080p sticks is, that they slowly want to remove the 4k alternative in stick form ...

As you see I am a worst case scenario guy. I honestly hope I am wrong and we will see a new 4K stick and even an UI update or the current 4K version.

1) I think Amazon is smarter than to produce 100 million units of a never-before-sold product.
2) There's so many 4K TVs out already and more to come in the future that it would be a huge mistake to get rid of 4K sticks. I think these 2 1080p sticks will be the last ones made by Amazon and then it's 4K and up devices from now on. Probably an 8K stick by 2024 if we follow the 3-year cycle.

I think they just saw there was no need to upgrade the 4K Stick because it was selling well and they could wait until 2021 to roll out a new 4K stick with 16gb of space, 2 or 3 GB of RAM and a chip that can do 4K 120fps AV1 decoding (to support the new 2021 QLED and OLED TVs with 120hz displays and allow game streaming)

I would be totally happy if you were right :-)

1. Yes
2. But many of those 4K TVs are Smart TVs with Amazon Prime apps already installed - so less of an incentive for Joe Public to buy a 4K stick.  There are a LOT of 1080p HD TVs that aren't smart - or have obsolete smart features that no longer work - and a 1080p FireTV Stick makes a lot of sense for upgrading those.

You can read it both ways.

Personally I have a 4K HDR Smart TV but use my Apple TV 4K for all my streaming (apart from UHD HDR iPlayer which it doesn't do, and my TV does) as it does a better job than my Smart TV...

4K TV's have been on sale for 8 years now. Many of them have outdated software or software that has terrible app support so people went out and got the 4K Stick to get their apps working again or to use an app they couldn't use before. That plus the people with 1080p TVs who wanted a more powerful stick are what is driving the big sales of the 4K stick. Amazon knows that people keep believing they need a 1080p stick for their 1080p TV or don't want to spend extra for 4K so they knew they had to roll out another 1080p stick and keep doing so until most 1080p TVs end up recycled.

It will be interesting to see when we actually end up getting the new UI. Hopefully the following article is wrong. I want to see if they made any optimizations.

Infact I bought a cheap Median 40 inch 1080p device some months ago for around 100 $. While I attached a firetv 4k stick to it - the 1080p version would be really fine. So I can understand the use-case.

In Germany, especially with people older than 40, they buy a TV and only replace it if it gets broken :-). So there is a market for these cheaper 1080p only devices.

Yep - same in the UK. My mum had a 37" Panasonic Plasma for years - I bought her a 1080p Fire Stick to get her Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc. on it.

My early UHD SDR display still supports Netflix, iPlayer etc. via its internal Smart TV apps - though I can see that other manufacturers may no longer support updating their apps on these early displays - so there is a market I guess for a UHD solution too - but I also suspect people who bought UHD SDR displays were early adopters, and thus more likely to replace them with HDR etc.

Hi.
I own a 4K Fire TV Stick since its launch.
I thinks it's almost perfect, fast, reliable, etc. etc., but when I need to use Kodi, I always have to use another device because Fire TV does not support DTS passthrough.
I bought a MI TV Stick, Kodi works perfectly and DTS plays quite well, but the stick is really to much bugged, and slow.

I tried to install kodi-20201001-5c717b66-fritschfiretv-armeabi-v7a.apk, but I noticed that DTS options are still not available in Kodi.
Is there a way to make it work, or should I forget having DTS on Fire Stick 4K?
My audio system does not have HDMI, the firestick is connected to a splitter, which takes audio to receiver via optical cable.
This way Mi TV Stick has no problems and Kodi shows DTS options, but with Fire TV 4K it doesn't.

Hey, I am thinking of getting a Firestick4k just so I can play my DV rips since my TV media player is bit finicky when it comes to playing them. I want to know:

Will Kodi+Exoplayer be enough to run DV rips, and does it support frame rate matching when using Kodi. ? I really dont like using Plex cause I have never got it to work.

Are there any specific profiles that it supports like Atv Profile 5?
Is it able to run FEL DV or just MEL.
Is there an option to stream files over the network?
Are there currently any color space issue (like shield) or any audio sync problems?

Thanks
