I have a very hacky solution to this - a python script that I run with different arguments in skin shortcuts.  This is a simplified version of the script I use, which lets you choose to:

• open channels or guide window
  

and then one of:

• open the choose groups dialog
  
• open all channels
  
• open a specific (named) group
  
• open the last used group
  

It can also be run from favourites or remote / keyboard.

This is awesome. + 5 stars. Doesn't look like anyone in this thread noticed how good this is. Still works on Kodi 18.7 where do I send the beer money ?

@trogggy thanks a lot! didn't use exactly that but the concept is great, and it works just like I wanted.
