WMC or MediaPortal
#1
Hi,

Sorry if the thread title seems provocative. It isn't meant to be!

I've been using MediaPortal as a TV server for many years now. It records UK freeview in .ts format, which is basically .mpg. I use VideoReDo for editing.

It seems (no offence to the developers) that the MediaPortal plugin for Kodi is not well supported these days, so I thought I should consider alternatives. My server is running Win10, and I'd prefer to stick to Windows for the DVB drivers. I record directly to a NAS drive, as the server has very limited storage. All of this is easy to set up with MediaPortal.

So, should I consider a switch to this version of WMC? I am not entirely clear what it is. From what I recall, Microsoft has killed WMC. Is this software a compatible version? A new server with the same name?

Are the files produced going to be editable with VideoReDo?

Let's leave it there for now with the questions. I'm sure I will have more, but I am quite apprehensive about switching from something I have been successfully using for so long.

Best wishes,

Mark

Okay, so having done a bit more reading, it looks like I may have misunderstood what this software is.

This page

https://serverwmc.github.io/

says that serverwmc works on Windows 10, but needs wmc installed and configured, but does wmc actually work on Windows 10 ?

I haven't kept up with wmc on win10, but you can read about it on the MDL website.  Regardless though, its still a hack, I personally wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I did a bit more checking, and installed NextPVR. So far, it seems easy to configure and works fine. Much tighter integration with Kodi (than MediaPortal - no need for a plugin), so let's hope!

Best wishes,
