Solved Fire Stick 4K only plays for about half a minute before endlessly buffering
#1
I have a Fire Stick 4K. I'm trying to stream a 1080p H264 file, but everytime it plays, it manages to only play for a short amount of time, before the video freezes. The audio keeps playing for a few seconds, but then stops as well. The progress bar shows that it has buffered enough to be able to keep playing, yet it doesn't. I've tried lots of solutions to this, such as setting setting the adjustment of the refresh rate to 'always' and on start/stop. I have 'enable HQ scalers for scalers' set to 100%. I have not tried to play with hardware acceleration disabled, because people seemed to be mixed about whether that's a good idea or not. Is there a way to fix my problem?

SMB on Android devices in Kodi 18 has its hiccups right now unfortunately. Try a different network protocol.

I'm streaming from addons such as Youtube. It happens on every addon.

To receive meaningful assistance you will need to provide a full debug log.

The instructions are here... debug log (wiki)

If you are using the Basic Method, then ensure the following is applied...
1.Enable debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging,
2.Restart Kodi
3.Replicate the problem.
4.Upload the log to Kodi Paste Site manually or use the Kodi Logfile Uploader. (wiki) With either method post the link to the log back here.

If you are using the Advanced Method ensure you have correctly created and applied the advancedsettings.xml file (wiki)

In both instances, you should see the word DEBUG throughout the log.

Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs
Do NOT post your logs directly into the forum. Use the Kodi Paste Site. Post the link to your pasted log in the forum

Couldn't replicate the problem on an allowed addon. I did find out what the problem is, though. Due to a recent Fire OS update, the Fire Stick incorrectly switches to the correct framerate (24fps). Files with a framerate other than 24 fps play fine. A temporary workaround is to hold the rewind button and arrow up button for a few seconds and then in the menu that pops up you can force the display to 1080p 24 Hz. The issue likely can't be fixed by Kodi, as others on the internet have stated. Amazon will need to fix this in an OS update.

The workaround doesn't seem to work for me now, I'll try to replicate the problem on an allowed addon and see if I can post the debug log.

And if your device contains any banned addons (wiki) then you're on your own as far as support here goes.

Use the free program Mediainfo program to inspect the Metadata of such a problem file. Are you sure it's progressive ?
Interlaced 1080i H264 content will not work on the Fire TV Stick 4K.

You can post File metadata in https://paste.kodi.tv/ then hit Save (on the right) - it will auto generate a Link then to post on forums.
