When I plug off an external drive TMM does not show anymore many of the images anymore, some are displayed furthermore. What could I do to show all of the images?

this setting controls only how the image should be cached (mainly for CPU resources)..
-) plug-in your hdd
-) use the rebuild image cache feature (tools -> rebuild image cache)
-) ignore errors about not found movies (these are probably on other disks)
-) trink a cup of coffee

the result of fast is not as good as of smooth..
you have either the choice of building the cache fast or "beautiful" (speed over quality)

So rather beautiful. But, what does "beautiful" mean? Are there images skipped when using fast or does one get mor not beautiful images or so?

no, the algorithm to scale the images is faster, but produces less beautiful results (more artifacts)
