What distro are you using with Kodi?
#1
Just wondering what distro most of you guys are using with your install of Kodi.  I know Ubuntu is the officially supported one, but there are some others that seem pretty popular.

I'm currently using the latest version of Ubuntu (minimal install) on a dedicated Ryzen 2400G HTPC connected to a projector.  Normally I'd use something like LibreELEC, but I need to be able to use Firefox and a couple other programs on the system too.

If you have a preferred distro, are there any advantages to it on a dedicated system vs a different distro (easier to use with a projector etc.)?

Ubuntu, not only my daily driver as an 'office pc', but Kodi runs the most stable on it.
What about your 2400G, how does that perform on Ubuntu (which one?), as drivers and linux kernels can be tricky with AMD.

Libreelec on the Raspberry Pi, I  hidden the startup text, the Pi splash screen to make it as much of a set-top box as possibe.

I have two instances, one running on a 43" TV and the other on my Projector.

I have setup my server using Ubuntu Server - created a couple of bash scripts for backup purposes.
I did go rouge and added a GUI to the Server - only becuase I thought I could live without one - and nearly deleted my movies! I was meant to move them - not delete them in the CLI! - so from that day on - its had a GUI for those times I need to do somehing that is easier with a mouse!
Server: Ubuntu Server 22TB HDD running SAMBA
Kodi: 4 Raspberry Pi 3 running Libreelec -  on the main PC - running Linux Mint

I'm using Ubuntu 19.04 with its default kernel 5.0.  Minimal install with no added drivers or software other than Kodi.  It's been running great for the most part.

After a recent update, I noticed that I'm getting some random stutter during video playback, and I haven't had time to look into it yet.  The other annoyance is that whenever there are updates available, the system takes forever to boot and the HDD LED stays on solid for several minutes.  Normally it boots in a few seconds.

I have been useing Xubuntu for at least 2 years now and the newer version 19.04
runs Kodi like a charm and has a straight forward LogOut/LogIn change session
so I can auto boot to Kodi a.k.a. appliance mode.

1x Ubuntu 18.04 (Kernel 5.0.0-21) desktop - Main PC.  Kodi runs in a separate X window on the TV.
1x Ubuntu 16.04 (4.15.0-42) Minimal install.  Bedroom PC in a mediacentre case with LED display. No desktop, just runs Kodi and nothing else.
1x Ubuntu 16.04 (4.4.0-159) Server.  NFS file-server, Samba server, database server and DNS server.

2x rPi3  LibreElec 9.1.002

Desktop PC gets updates from time to time, the bedroom PC hardly ever and the server never does.   Only time I have had to touch the server since I set it up is when the original spinning rust decided to let the heads meet the platter. I was going to replace it with an SSD, but decided that it wouldn't really give me any benefit so just replaced it with another spinny thing.  @tjay260476 This is a proper server Wink  No GUI !!  In fact, no keyboard or monitor either.  All admin is done via ssh, not that there is any admin to do really.
Learning Linux the hard way !!

Another Ubuntu here. However I use it as a dedicated media center so no desktop use. Straight to Kodi via Openbox / Lightdm. The machine also functions as server on my lan... dhcp, dns, torrents, caching proxy for apt, minecraft servers, among other things. Also a pxe installer server & ltsp server which boots my bedroom boxes straight to Kodi as well.

Arch on a dedicated fanless Ryzen 2400G box, because all my machines run Arch. Including the (fanned) machine it replaced, which now has a 8-bay enclosure hooked up to it in another room doing all the server stuff.

Try to use M-Bab AMD kernel (https://github.com/M-Bab/linux-kernel-amdgpu-binaries/). Right now, I have kernel 5.2.13 and it is rock stable and absolutely smooth video playback. I have AMD Athlon 200GE with Vega graphics on Ubuntu 18.04.3, kodi-openbox.

I've been using Debian since 2002.
I got rid of windows for good (only used it via virtualbox) since 2008.

Now running Debian Testing.
Up until recently I've been using Krypton via normal repos and used apt-mark to keep deb-multimedia.org repo from installing Kodi Leia, and flathub's Kodi Leia to use Leia at the same time.
I now stopped using Krypton and only use Leia.
If you want to use Krypton on Debian like I did, do the following:

Keep Kodi 17.6 when using deb-multimedia.org
apt-mark hold kodi kodi-bin kodi-data kodi-repository-kodi
To release these files and let them upgrade
apt-mark unhold kodi kodi-bin kodi-data kodi-repository-kodi

You should add the deb-multimedia.org repo AFTER installing Kodi 17.6, and doing the apt-mark thing above.

Xubuntu 18.04 LTS (now updated to 18.04.3). I use it on a media-centre computer (bought fully built from quietpc.com), with rubyripper for CD ripping and Handbrake for DVDs.
