tvOS Update as a new platform for Kodi

No, manually installed addons will not auto update ever for security reasons. This feature is not specific to AppleTV.

Thank you very much for the quick response.

How far away from a proper release with working 4K HDR etc are we? Just to get an idea if it's worth to get/upgrade my dedicated Kodi device in the meantime if it still takes half or a maybe full year?

(this is in NO way meant as a "why does it take so long" post, just to make this clear)

The expectation is to deliver the same feature set that Kodi does for the AppleTV4/4K, that supports topshelf, the siri remote and fits in well with the tvOS experience.

The team are currently tackling the major items (let's call these the `big rocks` e.g. binary addons, storage etc.) and they understand what these are. We even understand what the medium sized rocks (e.g. refresh rates etc.) are and we'll need these too before we have something that we can provide test builds for. Once we begin to provide test builds this is when the community can help with figuring out what's left to tackle (i.e. the little rocks). If we provide test builds before this time we will be inundated with reports of things that don't work that we already know about Wink. We hope you guys, our users understand this, the support burden would be immense if we provide early access builds before we deem them ready.

Thanks to @Memphiz for his work on which the majority of this is based on and to @davilla from MrMc for all their support. Thanks to @sy6sy2 for getting the tooling up and running and @kambala and @Fuzzard for contributing the lion's share of the work so far.

For those of you that are brave enough you can try to build this yourself (tvOS Build), but please bear in mind this is not ready for mainstream and the more time the team speed build questions the less time spent on getting it ready for Kodi 19!

Note: there are site's online selling Kodi 19 for tvOS, they are just re-selling (an outdated version of) what the team are working on. Please don't expect support for tvOS until it's officially launched with (hopefully) Kodi 19.

Will there be an option to test Kodi using TestFlight on the Apple TV? I would really like to help and test it that way.

No. The same reasons we can't have Kodi on iOS store affect tvos.

The primary known blocker is the use of opengles.we were told by Apple that as of a date (can't remember when, but it's passed) store submissions for new apps would not be accepted if they used the OpenGLes framework.
The other big unknown that Apple reps couldn't confirm was our use of the plugin system. Essentially we were told, try a submission and we will see how review goes, they couldn't say whether it would be accepted or not, as at the time the rep wasnt aware of any apps that would put a certain condition of their t&c's to a test around plugin style usage.

No, being able to use TestFlight would be predicated on Kodi being available in the App Store which is not a path the team wish to take with Kodi.

Decisions on when and how we release and update kodi today is with the team. To go to the App Store would mean it would be at the behest of Apple and not something we would have the capacity to support.

That's too bad, but understandable. Thank you for the reply.
