Req Need help to choose a cheap Android TV box
#1
Hi,

I have a benq 24 inch PC monitor and a creative 2:1 desktop speaker that I aim to convert to an Android smart TV. Basically it would require an Android TV box.
However my problem lies elsewhere. So far whatever box I have checked do not have 3.5 mm headphone jack. They only have the so called AV port which looks like a 3.5 mm jack. Is there any way to convert that AV port so that I can use my desktop speakers with it? I was looking at those amlogic 905w/ 905 x processor TV boxes.

Please advise thanks in advance.

If your monitor has white red & yellow sockets, I think you need something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxhood-Female-...094&sr=8-4

Android TV Device Comparison Table (click)

Virtually all the AMLogic Chipset boxes have a regular 3.5mm headphone jack. It's a combined A/V and 3.5mm audio jack.

The highest quality audio I have heard out of these types of device comes from the ODROID N2, which has it own high quality inbuilt DAC with a 3.5mm headphone output.

Is the 3.5mm audio element of the AV port enabled permanently - or in software - independently of the video output?

Also - to the OP - does your Benq monitor have an HDMI or DVI input?  (You may run into 0-255 vs 16-235 level space issues if it's DVI and only accepts PC video levels - and may need to find a way of configuring Android to run 0-255 ?)

I'm not expert enough in the DVI-D implementation of Benq monitors, nor the HDMI output functionality of AMLogic devices to say for sure that the two will be fully compatible.  The DVI-D input on most PC monitors is designed to accept RGB 0-255 levels, where as HDMI outputs are usually RGB or YCbCr 16-235 levels. However it MAY well be that EDID from the monitor to the source device (Android box) will flag it only accepts 0-255 (if that is all it supports) - and then the Android box MAY output 0-255 video instead.

If you are in Europe - the other area of concern is whether the display accepts 50Hz video (many PC monitors don't)  European TV and DVD is 50Hz, and if your display only runs at 59.94/60Hz, 50Hz content will replay with judder, as every 5th frame is repeated.
